The death of Michael Jackson brought back memories of the year of Thriller. Actually I think it was closer to two years that it reigned supreme. I wonder if there will ever be another album that rocks the recording industry the way that Thriller did. I remember how all the guys I hung out were too cool to say anything complementary about Michael Jackson. I’ll never forget watching the Thriller video for the first time in the dorm and all the guys in the bursting out laughing when MJ says, “I’m not like other guys.” Looking at those videos now I can see just how talented MJ was – but at the time, I was too caught up in the jeers and hateful comments all my friends were making. Sometimes I wonder what kind of career he would have had if hadn’t peaked so massively in the mid 80s. Success breeds hate and massive success brings about massive hate.
FRED MUST DIE?
While the rest of the world was in shock about Michael Jackson, we here in the land of Youtube were reacting to Fred’s channel topping the one million subscriber level. I’ll be honest, I really haven’t been paying much attention to Fred since he burst on the scene last year. My subscription box is full enough the way it is. I did notice those comments floating around about the whole “unsubscribe to fred” campaign. And then I saw Michael Buckley’s video on WHATTHEBUCKSHOW about the whole unsubbing thing and so I decided to check out a few of Fred’s videos.
I was shocked to see just how many hater comments were on his videos. My first question was – why if they hate his success so much do the contribute to his continued success by viewing, commenting and rating his videos?
So I decided to make an animation making fun of those hater comments. I was quite surprised by the reaction. It lead me to do a survey and a sequel video which I will discus in my next post.
